A golf ball fitting comes down to four things, in order of importance. Compression is first: it has to match your swing speed. A firm, high-compression tour ball needs real clubhead speed to compress — swing too slow and you leave distance and feel on the table. A soft, low-compression ball compresses easily at moderate speeds and flies straighter, but a fast swinger can over-compress it and lose control. After compression comes spin (do you want maximum greenside bite, or lower spin for straighter, longer drives?), feel (soft vs. firm off the face and around the greens), and budget (a $58 urethane tour ball vs. a $25 soft ball that suits most amateurs). Swing speed determines how much you compress the ball. Faster swings (100+ mph driver) can fully compress firmer tour balls like the Pro V1x and use the spin they're built for. Slower swings (under ~90 mph) get more distance and better feel from lower-compression balls like the Supersoft. A ball that's too firm for your speed loses distance and feel.
How much a ball deforms when struck — lower compression is softer and easier to compress, higher compression is firmer and needs more speed. Matching compression to swing speed is the single biggest factor in a ball fitting.
